Taking Care of Your Wool Clothing
Wool clothing is wonderful, but if you are not cautious, then moths can spoil them. The most common solution we opt for, in order to keep the moths at bay is using moth ball. Not many people like the smell of moth balls. Here are a few tips to take care of the wool clothing.
Moths are opportunists, always on the watch for their next meal, but they like soiled and dirty cloths over the clean, fresh smelling cloths. You can store fine wool suits in their suit bags itself in a closet, but remember to add something that can leave a fresh scent in the bag, for instance a chunk of cedar wood or a cedar chip or a lavender sachet, but be sure to place it at the bottom of the suit in such a way that the freshening agent does not get in contact with the suit, else the suits might get stained from the oil in them. You can store your woolen blankets in a polythene bag, but do not forget to add any fresh smelling substance along with that, the easiest way is to use one or two dryer sheets. This way, you can ensure that the blankets smell fresh and repel away the moths.
Most of the wool clothing has a dry clean only tag attached to it, since most of the woolen products tend to shrink when washed. If you do not want to get your wool clothing dry washed, then check the label on the clothing first, if the garment has got less than fifty percent of real wool, then it is fine to wash it, else, it is better not to take a risk. Once you have figured out the type of fibers in the wool garments, always use cold water to wash them, even the garments with the lowest percentage of wool, might loose their shape if not washed with cold water. Go for hand washing the woolen garments, never put them in washing machine. If you are not comfortable washing the garments by hand, then check out if the washing machine has a wool garment selection, if yes, then you can try washing your cloths in that mode. Always wash woolen garments with detergents that are meant for washing woolen garments, if you use other detergents, they might be stronger and could damage the fibers in the garments.
If you are all set to wash the wool clothing with hand, you can try this - you can fill a tub or a sink with cold water , then add detergent and mix well. Add the clothing to the water and do not try to work with the garments, instead, just repeat the process using clean water and rinse. Do not ring the cloths in order to squeeze the water, instead use a towel and press the cloths into it to remove the excess water and then lie them flat on a towel and let them dry, never expose them to direct sunlight.
By following the above mentioned tips, you can save on hundreds of dollars spent on dry cleaning the wool clothing.
